Quake measuring 5.2 jolts New Zealand
WELLINGTON: A magnitude 5.2 earthquake shook New Zealand's central North Island before dawn on Tuesday, but police said there were no immediate reports of injury or damage.
The earthquake, centered 30 kilometers northwest of Lake Taupo, at 6.08 am occurred at a depth of 170 kilometers and was felt in parts of eastern North Island, geological agency GNS Science, said.
New Zealand sits above an area of the earth's crust where two tectonic plates are colliding and records more than 14,000 earthquakes a year - but only about 150 are felt by residents.
Fewer than 10 a year do any damage.
